In Fall 2017, two Berkeley English PhD candidates—Alex Catchings and Serena Le—embarked on a small educational venture called Open Story. Alex, especially, had dedicated several years of his life (and countless hours of research) to developing courses that could bridge high school and college English curriculums, humanize the test-taking process, and give a whole lot of love to a whole lot of Bay Area high schoolers.
More than anything, we wanted to continue what we had started through other means—thinking together and with our students about the importance of language and story-telling, fostering curiosity and engagement where it’s least expected, and challenging commonly held perspectives on preparatory education.
While we’re now taking a break to finish our graduate work, we’d love to continue hearing from you through the form below. We know that strong supplementary reading and writing courses—particularly those geared toward the needs and concerns of multilingual students and immigrant communities—are hard to come by. In fact, we believe they are more necessary now than ever before.
